Castle on the hill

Brescia, the “Lioness of Italy”, abounds in monuments and historic remains, living proof of its legendary past

Palazzo Martinengo Cesaresco

View the town’s history first-hand on a tour of the underground rooms of this 17th century building, with its remains of Iron-Age huts and Roman baths on the north side of Piazza del Foro in the heart of ancient Brescia, just round the corner from the Vespasian temple

The light and colours of the Lombard Renaissance

The best of Lombard realism features in civic and religious art collections on display in numerous churches and palaces. Artists from the Brescia school such as Foppa, Moretto, Romanino and Savoldo paved the way for the pictorial solutions of the great genius Caravaggio

Weapons Museum

The kings and emperors of yesteryear donned 'Brescian' armour; they ordered from the Valtrompia craftsmen swords and arquebuses that were veritable works of art. A magnificent collection revives the age of ancient sieges and medieal tournaments

“Risorgimento” Museum

For the famous Ten Days in 1849, Brescia the “Lioness of Italy” rose up against  the enemy, alone against a powerful army. The museum displays uniforms, weapons, love letters and other exhibits relating to the story of  Giuseppe Garibaldi and the Unification of  Italy

BRESCIA, POETRY AND MUSIC FOR THE SOUL

Brescia  boasts  a  musical  past  of  considerable  importance  just  waiting  to  be  discovered.  The  tour  follows in  the  steps  of  violin-maker  and  musician  Gasparo  da  Salò,  who  is  considered  the  inventor  of  the  violin, Luca  Marenzio,  king  of  the  madrigalists,  composer  Marcello,  chamberlain  of  the  Republic  of  Venice,  and the  Antegnati  organ  builders.  It  ends  with  the  Brescia  Guitar  and  Violin  Museum  and  the  atelier-cum-workshop  of  the  Passadori  siblings,  Arturo  Benedetti  Michelangeli’s  piano  tuners,  entire  generations  of whom  have  taken  the  pianoforte  to  the  drawing  rooms  of  the  nobility  and  the  most  famous  theatres  of Italy.

This extremely interesting tour is all about Brescia’s musical culture viewed in a historical and artistic context. It normally lasts about three hours, but can take up a whole day

The National Park of Rock Engravings in Valcamonica

The Camuni used to study the course of the stars and they were avid hunters. In Capo di Ponte, between the Concarena and Pizzo Badile, they carved their history into the mountains with thousands of engravings steeped in magic and symbolism

Ancient pile dwellings around Lake Garda

The “Prehistoric Pile-dwelling Sites around the Alps” designated by UNESCO in the Brescia area are the Lucone Lakes in Polpenazze, underwater discoveries in Manerba and Sirmione, and the Lavagnone area between Desenzano and Lonato, where the world’s oldest plough (2000 B.C.) has been unearthed
